LOCALBrora ~ Things to do ~ Places to seeDunrobin Castle - Just 15 miles from the hotel, this 189 roomed, majestic castle is one of Britain's oldest, continuously inhabited, houses, dating in part from the early 1300s. An extraordinary piece of history with absolutely stunning gardens, we recommend a visit. Open to the public from March through to October. Falconry Display - Dunrobin Castle also host a wonderful display of their birds of prey, including falcons, eagles, hawks and owls. Falls of Shin - a 40 minute drive from the hotel, this Visitor Centre is one of the best places in Scotland to see wild Atlantic salmon, in their natural habitat, battle their way up the waterfall on their annual journey to the spawning grounds in the headwaters of the River Shin. The salmon start their run as the waters warm from the end of April through to the end of November and can be easily seen from the well-maintained viewing platform, only 100 metres from the car park. Just a few yards from the visitor centre is a children's play-park, which is great fun for our younger visitors. The park is actually a small assault course - always popular and challenging for the more adventurous. The adjoining forestry walks range from only five minutes to nearly one hour through the pretty forest areas. Dog walking is encouraged and you can either take a gentle stroll or really pace yourself! Clynelish Distillery - Just 5 minutes from the hotel, our own Clynelish is one of the most northerly distilleries in Scotland. Built in 1819 by the 1st Duke of Sutherland at a cost of £750, a visit is to follow in the footsteps of Scotland's earlier gold rush. See the distillers at work producing their own brand of liquid gold using spring water from the Clynemilton burn to produce this fruity, slightly smoky, single malt Scotch Whisky. As you enjoy your complimentary dram, you'll be enjoying a local resource, unchanged in character since the pioneering days of the last century. Open all year from 9.30am - 4pm but 4.30pm through the summer.
