Places To Visit

Places to visit in the Highlands

Just 5 miles from our Hotel, explore the residence at the nearby Dunrobin Castle, one of Britain’s oldest inhabited houses. Dating back to the early 1300s, the castle is the seat of the Clan Sutherland and holds a plethora of paintings, family memorabilia and furniture, as well as some beautiful gardens.

Follow in the footsteps of royalty at The Castle and Gardens of Mey, the former summer residence of The Queen Mother, who fell for its charm whilst mourning the death of her husband, King George VI. Situated in Thurso, just 90 minutes’ away, the Castle is a 5 star visitor attraction and includes a visitor centre and animal centre.

Days out in Scotland

Discover Brora’s archaeological and industrial past from the Stone Age, right up to present day at Brora Heritage Centre. An exhibition, interactive displays and a dinosaur play area will keep the whole family entertained whilst providing some fascinating facts about the village’s heritage. If you want to find out more about the North Highlands, visit Timespan, within 20 minutes of our Hotel. It’s an award-winning museum exploring the heritage of the region and the only public contemporary art gallery in Sutherland.

Take a tour round one of the North Highlands’ distilleries and sample some quality malt whiskies. Just 5 minutes from our Hotel is the Clynelish Distillery, which uses spring water from the Clynemilton Burn to create its own special blend, whilst Glenmorangie Distillery sits 20 minutes south of Brora and Old Pulteney is 60 minutes away in the town of Wick.

Take in two attractions in one trip when you visit Whaligoe, less than an hour north. Descend all 330 of The Whaligoe Steps, a path cut into a step gorge by fishermen in the 1800s leading to one of the least accessible harbours in the country, then back up and inland to the Cairn of Get, a well-preserved chambered tomb that has stood for over 5,000 years.

Visit the North West Highland Geopark, an area of geological interest just an hour’s drive from our Hotel. Covering huge areas of West Sutherland and Wester Ross, the diverse landscape of mountains, sandy beaches, ancient settlements and present day communities is of world class importance and quality. In preparation for your visit, the Orcadian Stone Company in Golspie is recommended, offering insight into the geological heritage of this part of the world.
