Scottish Beaches

Scottish beaches are as varied as they are breath-taking, and we like to think we have some of the best of them right here in Brora. Explore along the Northeast coast and discover rugged coastal landscapes, empty golden strips of beach, crashing waves and turquoise water that stretches as far as the eye can see.

Refreshing in every season. Whether you enjoy hazy summer days on golden sand beaches or brisk and invigorating shoreside walks in winter, our local Scottish beaches will find a way into your heart. So, take a deep breath of our fresh, clear sea air and reset yourself to Highland time.

Brora Beach

Locals will tell you that there are two beaches in Brora – the Front Beach and the Back Shore, although both are connected by one long strip of golden sand that stretches along the scenic coastline.

The Front Beach is to the North of the mouth of the River Brora and stretches for miles along golden sands and will take you past the 9th hole on Brora’s famous links golf course.  A two minute walk from the hotel will have you dipping your toes in the Dornoch Firth.

The Back Shore is accessed on the South of the River mouth and has a totally different character to its neighbouring beach.  With lots of rock pools to explore you can follow the shoreline all the way to Golspie for a beautiful and revitalising walk that bypasses the fairy-tale inspired Dunrobin Castle.

As you wander down the golden sand, keep an eye out for grey and common seals on the shoreline, as well as dolphins and minke whales in the turquoise blue sea.

Dornoch Beach

Travel a short 20 to 30 minutes south to reach another beautiful unspoiled Scottish beach in Dornoch. Situated on the coast of this historic village, beyond the world-famous golf course, lies a hidden strip of golden sand and crashing teal waves.

Feel the sun on your face as you wander down the beach or be adventurous and try out a new water sport such as paddle boarding or kayaking. There’s a children’s swing park nearby, as well as a takeaway coffee truck, making Dornoch beach a great spot for families.

Whilst you’re there, why not drop by our sister hotel, the Royal Golf Hotel Dornoch, for a delicious lunch that overlooks the famous Royal Dornoch Golf Club.

Portmahomack Beach

Portmahomack Beach lies on the west side of this  pretty seaside village and is only a 45 minute drive from Brora. A lovely, sheltered beach with a broad curved stretch of golden sand, backed by green sea grasses.

Its idyllic location is perfect for a gentle stroll before exploring the historic village of Portmahomack, and kids will love searching for hidden creatures in the rock pools at the end of the beach.
