There are some fantastic walks near Brora, as well as some close by Highland hikes that you can explore whilst visiting us. From gentle local coastal and loch side walks to adventurous mountain terrain, there is something for walkers and hikers of all ages and abilities – including your dog!

Brora Heritage Trail

The Brora Heritage Trail takes you on a historical journey through the village of Brora. Immerse yourself in the history of Brora and learn about our fascinating past and industrial heritage.

This gentle stroll can be taken at a leisurely pace in just over an hour, with regular sign stops that detail our unrivaled Highland industry including coal mines, salt production, breweries, distilleries and much more. Maps are available at reception.

Coastal Route To Golspie

Wander along the golden shoreline of Brora Beach to Golspie. A beautiful walk that may be slightly challenging for some, but equally rewarding for others.

The soft sand gives way at points for some rocks and small cliffs, including the Sputie Waterfall where seals are known to bask in the crisp Scottish weather. Along the way you can break off to explore Carn Liath and the picturesque Dunrobin Castle.

Return to Brora by train or bus or take the scenic route and explore inland via the equally picturesque inland trail, which takes you through an old informal golf course.

River Brora to Loch Brora

The walk from River Brora to Loch Brora can be split into three parts, so there is a walk to suit all abilities.

Jubilee Walks

The shortest of the three walks, the Jubilee walk is a pleasant riverside walk named after the Queen’s Jubilee in 1977. A short walk with plenty of benches dotted along the route so that you can stop to admire the views.

River Brora Path

This River Brora Path will take you through three settings where you can enjoy the old coal mining workings, croft land and the quaint riverside track. Turn around when you reach the bridge or keep going to venture onwards to the loch.

Doll Bridge to Loch Brora

The final part of your riverside journey will take you through a fisherman's path, where you may be lucky enough to spot some locals fly fishing, before travelling inland to a small woodland trail that ends on the beautiful banks of Loch Brora.

Ben Bhraggie

Ben Bhraggie dominates the skyline of the nearby village, Golspie, and can be conquered in 3.5 – 4 hours. A steep upwards climb of the hillside is rewarded by stunning views over the coastline and inland hills. The view stretches on for miles and both the east and west coast of Scotland can be seen on a clear day.

John O’Groats Trail

The John O’Groats Trail is not for the faint of heart but much like the NC500, it’s the adventure of a lifetime. Starting from Inverness, the trail passes through multiple landscapes including the treacherous terrain of the Black Isle, the coastal views of Dornoch and Brora before reaching mesmerising clifftops near Wick.

Stop to take in the sound of crashing waves and fresh sea air whilst in Brora and take a well-deserved rest in one of our charming hotel rooms.
