HighlandDay Trips

Explore the north of Scotland with Highland day trips from Brora. Located on the east coast of Sutherland, Brora is the perfect base from which you can explore the very best of what Scotland has to offer.

Journey inland or along the coast and enjoy some fantastic Highland day trips to iconic destinations such as Inverness, Loch Ness, John O’Groats and even Orkney! Embrace the pace and find out what makes the Highlands so special.

Loch Ness

A trip to the Highlands wouldn’t be complete without visiting the legendary Loch Ness. Arguably the most famous loch in the world that has been immortalised by the Loch Ness Monster, this beautiful loch is popular for a reason.

Located just under a two-hour drive from Brora, guests can enjoy a leisurely day trip if you set off early in the morning. Or speak to a member of our team to find out more about our organised day trips to Loch Ness, in partnership with Highland Explorer.

Inverness

Take a day trip to the central hub of the Highlands – Inverness! A small but bustling city, Inverness connects many of the remote villages and towns that are scattered across the north – including Brora. Travel south for just over an hour for a fun day of sightseeing, shopping, eating and drinking.

Top attractions in Inverness include Inverness Castle, Ness Islands, the Botanical Gardens, Inverness Cathedral and Inverness Museum and Art Gallery. There’s also plenty of options for souvenir shopping, with many high street and independent shops available, plus plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants to stop at for lunch or dinner.

John O’Groats

Travel along the NC500 to John O’ Groats, the most northern village in Scotland, which is located less than two hours away from Brora. Another quaint coastal village with breathtaking views across the North Sea towards Orkney. Visit in summer to enjoy pleasant weather and long summer nights or arrive in winter to gaze upon the Northern Lights.

Wander along the beautiful coast with walks including Dunnet Head and St John’s Point, where you can listen to thunderous waves crashing against the cliffs and see local sea life, such as seals and puffins, gathering.

Soak up some history by visiting the Castle and Gardens of Mey or the ruins of Castle Sinclair Girnigoe and don’t forget to stop for a tour of the historic Pulteney Distillery to savour the drams of your dreams.

Orkney Day Trip

As one of the most northerly islands in Scotland, Orkney is a must visit destination for history fans. Take the short ferry from John O’ Groats between May and September and spend the day exploring this vast and intriguing island.

Visit a number of archaeological sites, including the Ring of Brodgar, the Stones of Stenness, the Churchill Barriers and Skara Brae – a site that’s older than the pyramids!

Kylesku

Experience the shift in landscape as you travel towards the dramatic lands of the northwest coastline. Watch in wonder as sharp clifftops rise above crystal blue seas and white sand beaches.

Speak to a member of our team to organise a day trip to Kylesku, an iconic North Coast 500 location, that includes a passage through along Loch Shin to Laxford Bridge, a short coastal walk near Scourie, lunch at our award-winning sister hotel, Kylesku Hotel, and a return journey via Oykel Bridge.
